A Slow Slide into Slothfulness

It is no secret that those of us who have lived longer have accumulated more. We moved house recently and as we packed up, we realised how much stuff we had gathered over the years. And I wondered if that is how it is spiritually as well. We who are older have seen and experienced much. We know what evil humans are capable of and we know that we are not as good as we once might have thought. We have accumulated more material stuff as well as more experiences, and so the pull of evil on us is stronger.

We think we are wiser, so we warn youngsters of the pitfalls of life. True, they might not look before they leap, but those of us who are older can simply slide into the depths. I like to put my feet up sometimes when I am sitting on a couch, but after a while, I realise that my body has slid down until my back is no longer nice and straight. It’s a slow slide, like the way we slide away from fellowship with our Maker. It is a daily, even moment by moment battle for me.

And that is why I must soak myself in God’s word, because if I do not, self rises up and entices me to think of my own comfort, my own rights, my needs, and to value these more than I value my Maker!
